Dance notation definitions

F or Fwd = forwardB or Bck = back
S = sideTog = together
X = crossP = place (foot stays in its place)
H = hook
 
uppercase = leftF = forward with left foot
lowercase = rightf = forward with right foot
 
FS = free spin
 
L = ladyl = left
M = manr = right
 
LUAT = ladies underarm (pass) turn

Hitch = kick (or point), ball, change - usually with leverage on kick

Fundamentals 1a

Prerequisites:  None

All patterns use an anchor step ending
  • Underarm pass

  • Push break
  • 2 hand tuck and underarm turn

Fundamentals 1b

Prerequisites:  None

Note:  All patterns are 8 count (double, triple, double, triple) 1 2 3&4 5 6 7&8
All patterns use an anchor step ending
  • Lock whip
  • Basic whip
  • Lock whip with single LUAT
  • Whip with inside LUAT (left)
  • Whip with hand change behind lady's back

Fundamentals 2a

Prerequisites:  Fundamentals 1a & 1b

Note:  All patterns are 6 count (double, triple, triple) 1 2 3&4 5&6
All patterns use an anchor step ending
  • R-R underarm pass
  • Underarm pass with M's head loop
  • Push break with M's head loop
  • Push break with LUAT (sugar tuck)
  • Side pass with LUAT left
  • Side pass with LUAT left and HCBMB (hand change behind man's back)

Fundamentals 2b

Prerequisites:  Fundamentals 1a & 1b

Note:  All patterns are 8 count (double, triple, double, triple) 1 2 3&4 5 6 7&8
All patterns use an anchor step ending
  • Lock whip with double LUAT
  • Whip with outside LUAT (right)
  • Whip with double outside LUAT (right)
  • Whip with HCBMB (hand change behind man's back)
  • Lock whip with double LUAT and HCBMB
  • Double lock whip (lock whip to HmrLk, 2H LUAT to lock whip)

Fundamentals 2c

Prerequisites:  Fundamentals 1a & 1b

Note:  All patterns are 6 count (double, triple, triple) 1 2 3&4 5&6
All patterns use an anchor step ending
  • Right side pass with inside LUAT left
  • Tuck and turn to HmrLk
  • Underarm pass with M's UAT right
  • Underarm pass with HCBMB
  • Underarm pass with MUAT left
  • Left side pass with L free spin left

Fundamentals 2d

Prerequisites:  Fundamentals 1a & 1b

Note:  All patterns are 8 count (double, triple, double, triple) 1 2 3&4 5 6 7&8
All patterns use an anchor step ending
  • Underarm whip
  • Tummy whip
  • Tummy whip to whip to tummy whip to whip
  • SS (same side) whip
  • Lock whip with lady's free spin

Fundamentals 2e

Prerequisites:  Fundamentals 1a & 1b

Note:  All patterns are 6 count (double, triple, triple) 1 2 3&4 5&6
All patterns use an anchor step ending
  • R-R underarm pass with M's face loop
  • Left side pass with inside LUAT & M's UAT right
  • 2 hand tuck and single free spin
  • Left side pass barrel roll (inside LUAT left while M outside UAT right)
  • R-R left side pass with L free spin left

Fundamentals 2f

Prerequisites:  Fundamentals 1a & 1b

Note:  All patterns are 8 count (double, triple, double, triple) 1 2 3&4 5 6 7&8
All patterns use an anchor step ending
  • Back whip (karate block style)
  • Back whip with underarm turns (inside, outside & double outside)
  • All whips with M's hand change behind man's back on last unit

Intermediate 1a

Prerequisites:  Fundamentals 1a & 1b and

  1. At least 8 Fundamentals 2 courses, or
  2. At least 4 Fundamentals 2 courses if the rest of the Fundamentals 2 courses are taken concurrently with Intermediate courses
Note:  All patterns use a double resistance ending
Objective:  Learn to do double resistance and hitch steps smoothly
  • Hitch step push break (basic)
  • Hitch step basic whip
  • Double resistance push break with hitch step
  • Double resistance whip with hitch step
  • Double resistance any Fundamentals 1 or 2 patterns (optional)

Intermediate 1b

Prerequisites:  Fundamentals 1a & 1b and

  1. At least 8 Fundamentals 2 courses, or
  2. At least 4 Fundamentals 2 courses if the rest of the Fundamentals 2 courses are taken concurrently with Intermediate courses
Note:  All patterns are 6 count (double, triple, triple) 1 2 3&4 5&6
All patterns use an anchor step ending (optional:  also double resistance)
  • Back wrap to springboard
  • 2H back wrap to springboard
  • Underarm pass with M's free spin left to R-R right side pass and L FS
  • Same but M wrap 360 on 12 and FS L by outside of L's arm
Note:  M step fwd diag then turn center to yield body lead and spot L
Optional:  Add double resistance and hitch the above patterns
 

Intermediate 1c

Prerequisites:  Fundamentals 1a & 1b and

  1. At least 8 Fundamentals 2 courses, or
  2. At least 4 Fundamentals 2 courses if the rest of the Fundamentals 2 courses are taken concurrently with Intermediate courses
Note:  All patterns use a double resistance ending
Objective:  Apply double resistance with hitch smoothly to Fundamentals 2 patterns

Double resistance on the last rhythm unit and hitch step on 1 on the following patterns

  • Lock whip with double LUAT
  • Whip with outside LUAT (right)
  • Whip with double outside LUAT (right)
  • Whip with HCBMB (hand change behind man's back)
  • Lock whip with double LUAT and HCBMB
  • Double lock whip (lock whip to HmrLk, 2H LUAT to lock whip)

Intermediate 1d

Prerequisites:  Fundamentals 1a & 1b and

  1. At least 8 Fundamentals 2 courses, or
  2. At least 4 Fundamentals 2 courses if the rest of the Fundamentals 2 courses are taken concurrently with Intermediate courses
Note:  All patterns use an anchor step ending (optional:  also double resistance)
  • R-R underarm pass with M's face loop to closed position and tuck and turn
  • Walk whip (Jack Carey whip) walk 5 6, 7 face side & point, & change weight, 8 change weight
  • L/R cross hand lock whip
  • L/R cross hand lock whip and 4 hand lady head loop and slide
  • Lock whip with 2 hand double UAT and M right hand flick to cross hand lock whip and MUAT

Intermediate 1e

Prerequisites:  Fundamentals 1a & 1b and

  1. At least 8 Fundamentals 2 courses, or
  2. At least 4 Fundamentals 2 courses if the rest of the Fundamentals 2 courses are taken concurrently with Intermediate courses
Note:  All patterns use an anchor step ending (optional:  also double resistance)
  • Back whip
  • Left turning push break with LUAT (L does turning coaster step as in back whip)
  • Left turning push break with hand change behind man's back (HCBMB)

Advanced

Prerequisites:  All Fundamentals 1 & 2 courses and all Intermediate courses

This level is designed for more experienced dancers and is focused on technique, musicality, and choreographed amalgamations.  Sufficiently experienced dancers who complete all Fundamentals 1 & 2 and Intermediate courses may be promoted to this class with Dance Director approval.
